spring-fragrance

There's something about spring that always inspires me to wear a brand-new scent, but I have a confession (don't I always?). While I make a living writing about beauty, I am the opposite of a "nose." I get easily overwhelmed/overstimulated when trying on and comparing fragrances, so I often end up staying in a scent rut (or wearing none at all). So this time around, I decided to ask my friend Agnieszka Burnett, founder of the cool fragrance brand Nomaterra, for a little pep talk.
"For the spring, look for a fragrance that has ingredients that are uplifting, refreshing, and revitalizing. Scents with citrus notes are great; grapefruit, for example, has properties that are uplifting and detoxifying. Mandarin is another great note to look for in spring scents—it's inspiring and just what you need to put pep in your step and get that spring-cleaning and organizing done. You can also try narcotic white florals, like gardenia or jasmine, for more feminine yet fresh scents...think fruity florals."
"Avoid heavier scents that contain notes like vetiver or lots of amber, which does a great job of warming up a fragrance, but that's not what you're looking for in the spring."
As for the process of trying out scents? "Definitely don't try more than three fragrances within a short period of time, as they will all start to blend together. Make sure to try it on the skin and not just smell the stick, as the fragrance will react uniquely to your body chemistry. And wait at least a few hours to determine whether you like a fragrance; the base notes, which don't appear until a few hours into your fragrance wearing, are what you will be smelling for the most time that the fragrance is on you. Make sure you like the base and not just the initial spritz."

fragrance-rollerballs

1. They're travel-friendly.
Rollerballs are great because first and foremost, they're portable. I can easily throw three in my bag and have just as many different options for my weekend getaway to the Hamptons. Done. Also: no TSA hassle if you're flying somewhere.
2. You get targeted application.
Are you someone who generally over-applies fragrance? Scared of smelling like a baby prostitute a la Cady in Mean Girls? Or do you simply not want to overwhelm your date (or cubicle mate?) Then rollerballs are for you. Pick a few spots to focus on (back of the neck, pulse points, behind earlobes) and let the oils do the work, not your fingers!
3. They're relatively inexpensive.
Most rollerballs range from $15 to $25, which isn't bad for designer fragrance. Not sure if you want to take the $100 plunge for a bottle of Prada Candy? Try it first with the rollerball version. Even better, try four different scents for $100—and then decide whether you want the full version.
4. Rollerball scents are easy to layer.
We're big advocates of layering fragrance, here at Lipstick. It's a great way to create your own special scent and leave your signature around.
5. They can be really pretty!
OK, OK. I might be guilty of having a cup full of rollerballs on my desk JUST because they're pretty to look at. But it's true: Rollerballs are just as pretty to look at as their big sisters! And that's enough of a reason for me to hoard them.

That whole effortless chic thing that ends as "I might still be in my pajamas and excuse my giant pimple" for most of us? Miranda Kerr has it down. But you know what? There's a little something you can see going on here that helps her look more pulled-together.
Take a good look at her eyebrows. They have clearly been filled in with a little brow powder or pencil. This gives her face a little more structure, so her face looks...reinforced, if you will. And we can all use a little reinforcement from time to time.

It's just a beige eyeshadow look with some shading going on, but here's the thing: The shading isn't in her creases. It's in the dent under her brow bone just above them. This is a way to make your eyes look every bigger, since it visually moves the shadow there up slightly, opening everything under it up.

The drawers themselves are divided into categories like "Foundation" and "Lip products" to cut down on the time it takes to find a specific product she needs. Here's a view of the left-hand side:
